The Evil of Omission,
The story haunts me.
There is the evil of commission where murders, rapists and
thugs project misery on victims with intentional self-serving acts of evil. And
then there are acts of evil by omission The “owner” of an long neglected,
unfed, unsheltered and chained dog left town for more than a week. The animal
died of starvation and hypothermia. The “owner” was the embodiment of the
plodding stupid evil of omission. He was stone cold indifferent to if that
animal tethered to a utility pole lived or died. As a result, that one phone
call to the humane society to take the dog away never happened. The
neighborhood is complicit in the act of omission. His neighbors heard the
pleading howls of this shivering, starvation-cramped, helpless lonely beast and
did not make that one phone call…. until the dog had suffered to death. What
really haunts me is this was so common for this crowd it didn’t even provoke a
call until he mercifully passed away alone and in agony.
This “owner” is charged with a felony. He will be subject to
the law but not justice. The neighborhood will be just short yet another throw
away pit bull.
It makes decent people's souls hurt
