The NRA as default straw man

Robert Nelson, columnist for the Omaha World Herald did a stunning job of going out of his his way to trash a lot of good people in the state of Nebraska.  The OWH does not web link the opinion columns so here is the text:

Gun bill shot down in blaze of ignorance

 Wow. Talk about power.
The NRA now runs the Nebraska
Legislature even when it’s not trying to run it.
On Friday, a severely watereddown bill intended to address gun violence failed to win a majority vote in second-round debate.
The vote was 20-20. But 25 votes are needed to advance to the final round of debate.
This was not State Sen. Brad Ashford’s original LB 958. That measure would have required guns to be sold with trigger locks and required owners to report the theft of a gun within 48 hours.
There was no way these crazy ideas were getting past this session
of the 100th Nebraska Rifle Assembly. Also removed from the legislation was the establishment of a commission to identify inherently dangerous guns that should be banned. As the bill devolved, Ashford made great effort to seek out advice from NRA-affiliated gun experts, including one NRA gun safety instructor who had called me. The weapons expert pointed out flaws in Ashford’s early legislation and offered to talk with Ashford about making any legislation more effective without infringing on gun rights.
I later heard from several NRA members who were impressed with how Ashford actively pursued weapons instructors and other knowledgeable NRA members in an attempt to create effective legislation that might be palatable to enough state senators.
The final bill called for a State Crime Commission study of gun violence and illegal firearms trafficking. That’s it.
  But it was shot down.
  Why?
Sen. Russ Karpisek of Wilber explained last week.
Karpisek said that once alerted by the NRA regarding the first version of the bill, his constituency flooded him with mail admonishing him to vote against the legislation.
“They got a card from the NRA, and now they just see the bill number,” Karpisek said. “I said I’d vote against the bill, and I had to keep voting against the bill.”
Even though the NRA had dropped its earlier opposition to the bill, taking a courageous “neutral stance” on the version that was nonetheless defeated.
Meaning senators still were instructed by a mob of angry NRA members to kill the bill even though the mob obviously didn’t even know what the legislation said or that the NRA itself no longer opposed the revised bill.
Note to NRA cranks in this state: If you’re going to be politically active based on the doctrine of your religion, at least know what that doctrine is.
Beyond that, our elected officials should know that some loud minorities of their constituency will be strident in their stupidity. That’s why we have representative government.
We elect our representatives to make wise decisions based on the needs of their constituency combined with the information they garner in the hopefully information- rich setting of the legislative debate process. If we’re unhappy with their work, we don’t re-elect them.
Instead, in Nebraska, not only do we have a Legislature run by whichever lobbies have the resources to send the most spam and junk mail to their minions, we now have a direct government led by the ignorance of a rowdy few.
After all, Karpisek went with the mob even knowing that the mob didn’t know what it thought it knew.
As our 100th Nebraska Legislature draws to a close, it’s becoming clearer what form of democracy we’ll have in 21st-century Nebraska: a government by the loudest and dumbest for the lobby with the best direct-mail campaign.
Surely, exactly what the Founding Fathers intended.

This is the text of my post to the OWH Public Pulse. It will not, however, see the light of day in the OWH newspaper

Mr. Nelson in his April 2 column berates "a mob of angry NRA members" that are "cranks" "rowdy" "loudest" and "dumbest" for having the audacity to insert themselves as citizens in representative republic legislative considerations. This was on a bill to address "gun violence". As is typical of a diatribe against the NRA, Mr. Nelson had to overlook the fact that the NRA is comprised largely of responsible, law abiding, citizens that contribute to society. The gun violence is largely perpetrated by irresponsible. lawbreaking, parasites of society. The Von Maur shooter was not an NRA member. However in Mr. Nelson's view, the NRA is the problem because we properly put the onus of the crime on the perpetrator of illegal gun violence. Mr. Nelson is further incensed that willing, paying members of an organization representing their interests actually represented their interests. Mr. Nelson you can be assured, this "rowdy", "loud", "dumb", "angry" as well as responsible, law abiding, and proud NRA member will continue to be a politically active citizen.  It is my sincere desire those efforts it will be the stuff of future outraged columns.

The Evil of Omission

The Evil of Omission,

The story haunts me.

There is the evil of commission where murders, rapists and thugs project misery on victims with intentional self-serving acts of evil. And then there are acts of evil by omission The “owner” of an long neglected, unfed, unsheltered and chained dog left town for more than a week. The animal died of starvation and hypothermia. The “owner” was the embodiment of the plodding stupid evil of omission. He was stone cold indifferent to if that animal tethered to a utility pole lived or died. As a result, that one phone call to the humane society to take the dog away never happened. The neighborhood is complicit in the act of omission. His neighbors heard the pleading howls of this shivering, starvation-cramped, helpless lonely beast and did not make that one phone call…. until the dog had suffered to death. What really haunts me is this was so common for this crowd it didn’t even provoke a call until he mercifully passed away alone and in agony.

This “owner” is charged with a felony. He will be subject to the law but not justice. The neighborhood will be just short yet another throw away pit bull.

It makes decent people's souls hurt

Gas tax increase and the CWS bribe..... I've hit the Wall

I'm posting this because I can and the Omaha World Herald won't...

email to: Gwen Howard-Nebraska State Senator and Jim Vokal Omaha City Council member

I am writing to both of you because you are currently considering legislation that will raise taxes.

As a citizen and taxpayer I've hit the wall.

Just stop it.

Increasing the amount of money state and local government takes from my wife and I to fund a new stadium or state roads employee retirement does not occur in a vacuum. Our property taxes have increased 30% since we purchased our home in 1999. Our utility taxes have increased and will continue to increase. The pending sewer upgrades mandated by the Federal Government will result in a staggering 5000% increase in sewer fees. Notice I'm detailing only the some of the local taxes. A comprehensive inventory is just too damn depressing and time consuming. This obviously does not include the realities of the ever increasing cost of living our lives in the same manner we have for the past ten years.

The discussions of a gas tax increase or funding a new stadium are all predicated on taking somebody else's money who worked for it and rerouting it to an actual or perceived state/city services benefit that includes people who haven't worked for it.

The bottom line...it's never enough money. Be it education, state and local union employees compensation, roads, state capital fountains, new CWS baseball stadium, and on and on and on. Mr. Vokal, we can't, as a city, appropriately fund park maintenance that benefits local citizens year round but, by Fahey, we'll find a way to pay for that damned $140M NCAA bribe to keep the two week CWS here for some TBA time. Ms. Howard, a gas tax increase? A gas tax increase? In a state that has the dubious distinction of a national top ten tax burden as well as retail gas prices' steep price increase, somehow the concept of a gas tax increase borders on the absurd for us civilians.

You want a really ground breaking concept that mirrors the decisions that your constituency makes every year? Freeze the budget.

My fetching wife and I don't have a 3% to 5% increase in our funding every year. I'm pretty sure our neighbors don't have that funding written into their life contract. But State and City government will consistently take that much more money from us every year and point to all of the pressures associated with--are you ready--increased costs. I have increased costs of funding your increased costs, I just don't have the power of law to take somebody else's money to offset my increased costs.

Change the dynamic, really make a difference. Freeze the budget for two years. And then challenge every state/city government agency, union and employee to find and implement ways to cut costs and waste, reject cronyism and make better use of the taxpayer's money. Hey I know they would not do this because it's the right thing to do. They would do it because...well...the budget is frozen. I am confident there would be a Greek chorus' worth of weeping and gnashing of teeth about the abject chaos that would result for state society. Then maybe,..just maybe, the folks we entrusted by vote or appointment to manage our substantial and ever growing investment in government will take that time to evaluate how they could be better stewards of that trust. Because.... they hit a wall.

This is a local appeal repeated thousands of times by other responsible involved citizens across this nation to their and state government officials. I can only hope that this chorus of common sense and fiscal responsibility will have the audience and respect it deserves by those same officials

Obama Spiritual Advisor channels a dead Bull Conner & a live Nasrallah

It was jarring.

I 'd had gotten a heads up from some talk radio hosts, read some blog posts and saw a reference or two in newspaper campaign stories on this loose cannon Reverend Jeremiah Wright. I was thinking to myself that a Chicago pol like Obama would have some circus characters along for the ride. Then I saw the video of samples of his "sermons".

There will be reams of spot on condemnation, analysis and guilty white men apologist justifications generated in the coming days. Masters of the spoken and written word from my side of the political/moral isle will eloquently filet, season, grill and devour this Race Hustler for Jesus fraud and Obama campaign staffer.  I will defer to their wickedly deft use of the literary rapier on the bone chilling fact that the American Idol as Messiah Presidential candidate thinks Uncle Wright is worth 20 years of Sundays.

I am as as troubled, perhaps more so on two other companion issues associated with Wright's enthusiastic acceptance and endorsement by the Messiah and a large number of this nations Black Americans.

First, Wright's the-white-man-is-the-most-insideous-problem-for-black-America stinks up reasoned, useful and contributory discussions to try to solve the intractable problems in inner city black America. The misery of staggering numbers of out of wedlock children, unemployment, drug abuse and violence are community self inflicted wounds. White guys are too busy with their own life to have time to sabotage your neighborhood. The Wright  mentality of redirected responsibility assures poor black neighborhoods will stay poor black neighborhoods. Reverend , the fact that Hillery has never been called a n*gger will not make young black men more accountable or care more for the children they father.

Second, watch the video and then mentally substitute "Jews" or "Americans" for "rich white men" of one his sermons. Wrights venom could be duplicated in any number of London, Detroit or Tehran Mosques just with a different Satan.

Mrs Spitzer, gold digging will rot your soul

Okay, We've established that the Hard Rod of Justice found his wife to be... how you say.."unsuitable" for things that, like, you might not think were safe.

The so called tragic figure of Mrs. Spitzer  took a humiliation bullet for her family. She acted as the obligatory stoic wife prop during the  predictably pathetic news conference photo op. The busted husband then gave us 96 seconds of a chastened statement of yes you got me in some sort of vague personal matter that I might have been getting jiggy with prime meat my daughters age and I'll get back to you. Wow! The BS meter just  exploded.

Okay girls, can we talk? (my wife hates it when I do this).

She Knew.

What ever his appetites, she was not  serving. He looked to outsource his meals. They struck a deal.  He could go out to dine but she kept the rights to the family dinner table and In Law Daddy's money. He chose to eat out and she chose to look away. He chose to play with bottom feeders that traffic in humans. Hey, the same crowd that serves up  $5K, 22 year old women, will have $10K 9 year old boys on the menu. And the Spitzer children..hey yo get back here...keep focused ....it's about us...

The price of her pride was negotiated years ago.

And then the IRS waitress comes along with that damned irritating money laundering auditing check  Geez I have to pay the check..Wait a minute do you know who I am?.... Yes Gov. Elliot your Client # 9

So ladies, feeling good about that "I am woman hear me cash my divorce settlement check"  to some how mollify my humiliation concept????

Omaha Stadium Public Forum as Bloodsport

To quote a fellow Freeper  "Just Damn!"

I attended the Monday, March 11th public forum on the NCAA "Jump!" Omaha "How High?" stadium proposal.

I came away with three conclusions:
  1. The Founding Fathers were absolutely brilliant in creating a representative republic. True democracy is noisy, inefficient, often inarticulate with careening agenda's. It is however occasionally entertaining... in a train wreck sort of way. Similar to talk radio without call screeners.
  2. I was reminded during the public comment and questions portion of the meeting why talk radio has call screeners.
  3. The new downtown stadium is a done deal regardless of how many of the Blatters swamp and then weep, moan, berate and filibuster any given public function.
For clarity of position--HatfieldMccoy ( a little Bob Dole third person going on here)  is opposed to spending any more protection money to the NCAA mob.

To you Blatters, get a grip... News Flash ....NCAA Admits It's About the Money, States 59 year Legacy and Five Dollars will get you a Diet Coke at new Indianapolis 24,000 Seat Downtown Baseball Stadium.

To paraphrase a famous quote "we have established what the NCAA is, now Omaha just has to negotiate a price. So far we've been told at least $140M will get probably get us around 20 years of two week encounters.  If you get rid of the 59 year old lady. And they swear they won't be seeing anyone else... They are such a tease.. We need Elliot Spitzer as a consultant on this deal....

Regardless of what the Blatters or the Hat thinks, Fahey and the Stadium committee have all of the private funding juice, major corporate sign on and government power to make this happen. Mayor Fahey was clear during the Monday's "get bent and vent" session that any vote on the this plan was going to happen after the new stadium deal ink was dry and the luxury boxes were sold. That vote is called the Mayor's race. The city council may hide under rock's for awhile to avoid the inevitable. The bottom line--when the smoke clears and the head count starts not one of these elected officials will want to be associated with losing the CWS during their term. And by God they will spend as much of somebody else's money needed to assure that won't happen.

Perhaps a Public Meeting on which direction the new stadium faces is in order.......however, we need a screener.

Can't touch this

To my Ones of readers (Hey it's early)
As the new Blog On the Block I thought I'd set the tone for my study in the 1st Amendment.
Props to KFAB Omaha for this common sense slam dunk:
"Political correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous main stream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end."

Learn it, live it, love it...
